Training Wind Band
Training Wind Band is for those young musicians who have recently taken up a wind or brass instrument including Flute, Oboe, Bassoon Saxophone, Clarinet, Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium, French Horn etc. Percussion players are also included.
Training Wind Band is a fun, friendly introduction to group music-making for young wind, brass and percussion players. Come along and give it a try if you have learnt at least the 1st five notes on your instrument and are starting to learn how to read music. We have easier parts for beginners and more challenging parts for those around Grade 1 or 2 level.

Junior Wind Band
Junior Wind Band is for wind, brass and percussion players who have reached around Grade 2 level and are gaining confidence in sight-reading. We have fun playing a wide variety of music, from rock to classical, musicals to film music.

Intermediate Wind Band
Intermediate band is for Woodwind, Brass and Percussion players who are more confident in their playing and reading skills. We play a wide variety of music that includes Concert Marches, Film and Musical Theatre medleys and famous classical music pieces too. They will often have more adventurous time signatures and more frequent changes of key signature.
Being approximately Grade 4 on your instrument is the recommended entry point but a completed exam is not necessary.
We have a full range of orchestral percussion and can offer full training on these to anyone who learns a non-band instrument to a similar standard and wishes to come and learn a new skill.

Senior Wind Band
Senior Band is SAYM’s highest standard wind ensemble and it is recommended for players to be at grade 6 level or above.
We have a large library of exciting and challenging music to play and each year we pick a more adventurous classic piece from the professional concert band repertoire to work on – recent challenges have been Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich, Incantation and Dance by John Barnes Chance and Barn Dance and Cowboy Hymn by Philip Sparke.
We set high performance standards for this ensemble but also have a lot of fun.
